about

The project „solo works" is a look back on the last ten years of my work and simultaneously a hommage to the golden age of guitar music.

My understanding and view of the instrument was formatively influenced by guitarists such as Julian Bream, Alvaro Pierri, Pepe Romero and composers such as Agustin Barrios Mangoré, Francisco Tarrega, Baden Powell and Luiz Bonfa who explored the sound of the guitar in new unique ways in their compositions.
It is also a love letter to the guitar itself, it’s timbre and wonderful sense ensnaring sound.
I created my own compositions in different phases. The pieces by composers Agustin Barrios Mangoré, Francisco Tarrega, Baden Powell and Antonio Lauro were my main source of inspiration during the creation of the sounds, moods and musical twists and turns of this recording.

Biography

Jens-Uwe Popp was born in 1967 in Rendsburg/Germany. He started playing classical guitar at the age of six. He studied classical guitar in Lübeck and Hamburg. He was a member of the acclaimed „Hamburger Gitarrenduo” with which he and his duo partner Michael Bentzien won several international chamber music competitions. After his studies chamber music continued to be his main focus. He collaborated and performed with musicians such as Giora Feidman, Efim Jourist, Jochen Roß and Avi Avital. One of his most important musical collaborations was with David Orlowsky and Florian Dohrmann. Together they formed the David Orlowsky Trio from 2005 to 2019 and won the renowned Echo Classical Music Award twice. Apart from playing countless concerts in prestigious venues such as Carnegie Hall in New York, Wigmore Hall in London and the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam this collaboration also influenced his work as a composer. He wrote his first composition „Nessiah” for the trio in 2008 and many more were to follow. His compositions enrich the repertoire and aesthetics of the classical guitar by highlighting the strengths, unique timbre and delicate sound of this instrument.
